A Voice for Ward 6 Families

Meet Jenny Mercado

A bilingual community leader, healthcare professional, nonprofit founder, and Providence School Board Member dedicated to advancing opportunity, equity, and access for immigrant and underserved families. A proud Latina, mother, and advocate, her life and leadership have been shaped by her own journey as an immigrant overcoming barriers to opportunity.

Priorities

Priority 1

Strong Public Schools and Opportunity for Our Children

Jenny believes in being fiscally responsible, transparent, and willing to make smart investments in our children's future. Providence must keep moving its schools forward from the failures outlined in the 2019 Johns Hopkins Report; our children deserve better. Jenny knows we can support strong public schools while also demanding accountability, and support teachers while making sure budgets are balanced responsibly. She will work to improve school buildings, strengthen career and technical education opportunities, support student mental health, and ensure classrooms have the resources students need to succeed. As a mayor-appointed member of the Providence School Board, Jenny advocates for equitable educational opportunities, strong family engagement, improved access for multilingual learners, and responsible stewardship of public resources. As a newcomer student who arrived at 15 learning a new language and navigating an unfamiliar school system, and as the mother of twin daughters at Classical High School, she is committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, language, or circumstance, has the opportunity to succeed.

Priority 2

Housing That Keeps Families in Their Homes

Jenny understands how difficult the housing crisis has become. Families should not have to fear unfair rent increases, unsafe housing conditions, or feel powerless when problems arise. At the same time, many landlords are hardworking people trying to support their own families and maintain their properties responsibly. Jenny believes we need practical and balanced solutions that protect tenants, support responsible property owners, increase affordable housing opportunities, strengthen neighborhood code enforcement, and create pathways to homeownership for working families. She has sat with residents worried about flooding after heavy rains and listened to families concerned about unsafe conditions and neglected properties that too often go ignored. Through Hermandad por Nicaragua, the nonprofit she founded, Jenny has connected families to housing, employment, and essential community resources, helping them build stability. On the City Council, she will work to keep families in their homes and strengthen our community.

Priority 3

Clean, Safe, Responsive Neighborhoods

One of Jenny's priorities is to consistently respond to neighborhood concerns. She will regularly walk and drive through our neighborhoods with residents, because leadership should never happen from behind a desk alone. Leadership means showing up. Jenny is committed to keeping our neighborhoods clean, safe, and welcoming for families; helping residents get answers and results when city services fall short; supporting our seniors and making sure they have access to the services, programs, and respect they deserve; and standing with the small businesses that create jobs and help our neighborhoods thrive. She will be present, accessible, and responsive to residents year-round, not just during election season: listening first, working hard, and following through on her commitments. Jenny believes our neighborhoods can be cleaner, safer, healthier, and stronger, and that when we work together block by block, family by family, neighborhood by neighborhood, we can build a Providence where every family feels seen, supported, and proud to call this community home.
